Power BI Dashboard Basics

What you will learn: how to turn a raw data table into a dashboard people will actually look at.

Power BI

By the end, you should be able to

  • Pick one clear question for a dashboard to answer.
  • Build a single, focused visual before adding more.
  • Avoid the "wall of charts" trap.

Why this matters at work

A good dashboard answers a question at a glance. A bad one is a wall of charts nobody opens twice. Learning the basics saves you from building reports that get ignored.

Simple explanation

Start with the question, not the data.

Rule of thumb: pick one question (e.g. "Are we hitting our monthly target?"), build one clear visual that answers it first, then add supporting detail. Fewer, clearer visuals beat more, busier ones.

Real workplace example

A weekly defect report nobody reads

A supervisor tracks weekly defect counts by shift in a spreadsheet no one checks.

  1. Step 1: Decide the question the dashboard needs to answer: "Are defects trending up or down?"
  2. Step 2: Build one trend line with a target line overlaid — nothing else, yet.
  3. Step 3: The same data now gets checked every Monday because the answer is visible in two seconds.

Common mistake

Watch out for: adding every available chart "just in case." A dashboard with 12 visuals and no clear question usually gets opened once and ignored.

Try it yourself

Take one metric you track today. Sketch, on paper, the single chart that would answer "how are we doing?" without any extra clutter.

What should you decide before building any visuals?
